Background of the Study

Occupational health hazards are a significant concern for factory workers, who are often exposed to dangerous working conditions that can lead to both short- and long-term health problems. In Kogi State, the industrial sector has grown rapidly, with many workers employed in manufacturing and production plants. These workers face various occupational hazards, including exposure to harmful chemicals, physical injuries, respiratory problems from dust and fumes, and mental health issues due to long working hours. The study aims to evaluate the types and prevalence of occupational health hazards faced by factory workers in Kogi State and assess the effectiveness of current safety measures in mitigating these risks.

Statement of the Problem

Despite efforts to improve workplace safety, many factory workers in Kogi State continue to face significant health risks due to inadequate safety measures, insufficient protective equipment, and poor working conditions. There is a lack of comprehensive data on the specific health hazards encountered by factory workers in the region, which hinders the development of targeted interventions. This study seeks to fill this gap by assessing the occupational health hazards present in Kogi State’s factories and evaluating the impact of these hazards on workers' health.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify the common occupational health hazards faced by factory workers in Kogi State.
  2. To assess the impact of these hazards on the physical and mental health of factory workers.
  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of current workplace safety measures and recommend improvements.

Research Questions

  1. What are the primary occupational health hazards faced by factory workers in Kogi State?
  2. How do these occupational hazards impact the health and well-being of factory workers in Kogi State?
  3. Are the current safety measures in place adequate in protecting factory workers from these health hazards?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Factory workers in Kogi State are exposed to significant occupational health hazards that negatively impact their physical and mental health.
  2. The prevalence of health problems such as respiratory issues and injuries is higher among factory workers compared to other sectors in Kogi State.
  3. Current workplace safety measures in Kogi State are inadequate in addressing the occupational health hazards faced by factory workers.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on factory workers in industrial zones in Kogi State. Limitations include potential bias in workers' self-reports regarding their health conditions and workplace safety, and the difficulty in obtaining detailed records on health outcomes related to occupational hazards.

Definitions of Terms

  • Occupational Health Hazards: Workplace conditions or substances that pose risks to the health and safety of workers.
  • Factory Workers: Individuals employed in manufacturing or production roles within industrial settings.
  • Safety Measures: Procedures and equipment implemented in workplaces to minimize or prevent health and safety risks.
